Anselm Kiefer Pavilion

Designed by David Chipperfield, a permanent pavilion for Black Flakes, Anselm Kiefer’s largest work in the Würth Collection, now stands on the premises of Museum Würth 2 in Künzelsau, Germany. This marks the first time that the large-format work is shown to the public. The pavilion opened to visitors on October 13, 2026.

The Anselm Kiefer Pavilion, located in the south-western part of the premises, is part of the Würth Sculpture Garden surrounding the Carmen Würth Forum. The idea for the pavilion comes from Anselm Kiefer, who has also commissioned several other buildings for his individual works. The pavilion reflects the architectural style of Museum Würth 2 and the Carmen Würth Forum, both designed by David Chipperfield Architects.

Created in cooperation with Anselm Kiefer, one of the best-known and most successful German artists of the post-war period, the minimalist building features several dome skylights. Its architecture places the eleven-metre-high and seven-metre-wide Black Flakes at the centre of attention.

The large-format painting, created in 2007, serves as a quotation from Paul Celan’s poem of the same name, one of the most important works by a German-speaking poet of the 20th century. The poem reflects Celan’s traumatic experience during the Holocaust. History and myth, destruction and reconstruction define Kiefer’s monumental work, which explores the nature of the universe and of human beings.

Kunsthalle Würth in Schwäbisch Hall, Germany, opens its doors with an exhibition dedicated to Anselm Kiefer

The pavilion at Museum Würth 2 complements the exhibition of Kiefer’s works at Kunsthalle Würth in Schwäbisch Hall that will be shown for its reopening and 25th anniversary. From October 16, 2026 to October 3, 2027, Kunsthalle Würth will show the exhibition “Anselm Kiefer—All That Is the Case” featuring some 70 important works from all phases of his work owned by the Würth Collection, supplemented by loans from the artist’s own studio.
